ROYSE CITY —
Mount Pleasant- If you have to lose your final game of the season, it is better to have lost in the playoffs. That means you were one of the best to keep playing. And the Royse City Bulldogs did cap off their 100th anniversary with a playoff appearance.
The Kilgore Bulldogs however showed little or no respect for the centennial celebration as they handed Royse City a 44-6 Division II Region II Bi-District playoff loss.
Kilgore capitalized on a fumble recovery and four pass interceptions to cruise to the win. A second quarter 30 point burst of Kilgore Bulldog points also proved to be just too much to overcome by Royse City.
The game however started out with both teams trading punches and trading scores. Kilgore opened the scoring with 7:46 remaining in the first period and Hugo Orta booted the point after to give them a 7-0 lead. Six minutes later Royse City’s Samuel Rushing broke free for a 10 yard touchdown scamper, however a rare extra point miss by the Royse City Bulldogs left the first quarter score at 7-6.
In the second quarter the Kilgore Bulldogs proceeded to light up the scoreboard beginning with a 38 yard field goal by Orta, a two yard touchdown run by LD Anthony, a 42 yard pass reception by Matthew Dickey from quarterback Riley Toler, a one yard touchdown run by Tolar and another touchdown of two yards by Anthony to give Kilgore a 37-6 halftime lead.
The good news was that Kilgore scored but one touchdown in the second half on a 5 yard run by Dondra Halton. Orta’s point after kick finalized all of the scoring in the game with 11:55 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Royse City offense just could not move the football against the Kilgore defense and were forced to punt seven times during the game. Kilgore’s running attack was led by LD Anthony with a 3 touchdown, 167 yard rushing effort. The Bulldogs offense was led by Saul Garcia with 8 carries for 77 yards.
Kilgore’s offense dominated with 363 total yards vs. 210 for Royse City.
