ROYSE CITY —
The Royse City Lady Bulldogs took on the Princeton High School Lady Panthers in their second pre-season game of the year on Friday, Feb. 17. And, despite being pretty evenly matched throughout, the Lady Bulldogs emerged victorious.
Early on, the Lady Bulldogs displayed a performance that would ultimately set the pace of the whole game when, in the first inning, they were able to narrowly keep a runner from the other team from scoring and then bringing in center fielder Shelbi Bane for the first run of the game. The Bulldogs did not get to enjoy their lead for very long, as the Panthers answered back just two innings later, with their first run by Sierra Johnson.
This back and forth scoring continued through to the bottom of the fifth inning, with the Bulldogs scoring again in the fourth and the Panthers scoring again in the top of the fifth. However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Bulldogs managed to load the bases and that is where they were finally able to break a way from the Panthers enough to secure their victory. The Panthers fought back, but it was to no avail once the Bulldogs got two more runs by Bane and infielder Maddie Sisk in the sixth inning.
Throughout the night, the Panthers’ pitcher Katie McMullen and the Bulldogs’ pitcher Sam Edgar both posted strong performances, allowing for no more than the occasional single in any given inning. So when it came down to it, the deciding factor of this game was not which team was better at getting on base, but rather which team worked the bases better. Luckily for the Lady Bulldogs, however, the two of the players who worked the bases exceptionally well - Edgar and Bane – also happened to be the two players who seemed to do the best job of consistently getting on base.
Though they eventually defeated the Lady Panthers, there is still some room for improvement in the Lady Bulldogs’ game. There were a handful of instances throughout the game – including no less than three “bases load” situations – where, if they had been more successful, the Bulldogs could have clinched the victory early on rather than finally taking a commanding lead in the fifth inning.
Something else that seemed to have cost the Panthers the game is a lack of communication in the outfield. A few times where two players headed to catch the same ball, and a lack of communication caused one or both of them to trip over the other and miss the play.
The Lady Bulldogs are at home again for their next preseason game against the Kaufman Lady Lions on Tuesday, Feb. 21, before they hit the road for tournament play in Allen from Feb. 23-25.
