Bulldogs host annual powerlifting meet

The Royse City powerlifting team hosted its 4th Annual Powerlifting Invitational on Saturday with 17 boys teams and seven girls teams competing at the RCISD Middle School gymnasium.

Jayci Nelson led the Royse City girls team to its fourth-place finish behind champion Forney, second-place Weatherford and third-place Wills Point by capturing the championship in the 132-pound weight class.

Nelson lifted 610 total pounds with 240 in the Squat, 125 in the Bench Press and 245 in the Dead Lift en route to the individual title.

The Lady Bulldogs garnered one first-place finish, one second, one third, two fourths and two fifths for 21 total points. They picked up third, fourth and fifth places in the 148-pound class with Katie Schell lifting 560 pounds for third, Rebecca Zernick 555 for fourth and Tiffany Cooper 535 for fifth.

Hannah Palmer claimed a fourth place (655) and Megan Burton earned a fifth (365) in the 181-pound division and Kaylie Jones came in second (655) in the 220-pound weight class.

Best Lifter awards in the girls division went to Weatherford's Alysia Arriaga in the 97-165 class and to Forney's Lauren Hartwick in the 181-220 plus class.

The Royse City boys wrapped up seventh-place team honors with two second-place finishes, one third and one fourth for 15 points. Justin Northwest won the boys team title with 29 points. South Garland, Sachse and Denison were close behind with 21 points each.

Matthew Cortez and Jose Ramirez sparked the Bulldogs with silver medals in the 198-pound class and 242-pound division respectively.

Cortez lifted 1285 pounds with 540 in the Squat, 295 in the Bench Press and 450 in the Dead Lift to finish 75 pounds out of first place. Ramirez totaled 1315 pounds, the same as gold medalist Tyrone Melton of Sachse, but Melton finished six points ahead in the Swartz total.

Brady Johnston added a bronze for the Bulldogs in the 220-pound weight class with 1135 pounds (415 Squat, 265 Bench and 455 Dead Lift) and Chris Doyle posted a fourth in the 132-pound division with 795 total pounds (275 Squat, 185 Bench and 335 Dead Lift).

Sachse's Joey Silva won Best Lifter in the 114-165 class and Rishaad Wimbley of Forney earned the honor in the 181-SHW class.
