Royse City —
Seven temporary speed humps will be installed in the Sunrise Meadows neighborhood when construction on the Interstate 30-Erby Campbell Boulevard overpass begins and service roads are converted to one-way.
Public Works Director Dario Lopez told city council members during a July 24 regular meeting that four temporary speed humps will be installed on Cookston Lane and three will be installed on Welch Road.
City officials are looking at speed humps and other traffic control measures because traffic on the neighborhood streets is expected to increase when the service roads become one-way.
Plans call for the south service road to be one-way eastward from Circle Drive west of Omi Crane Systems Inc., to Farm to Market 548. The north service road would be one-way from FM 548 westward to East Fate Main Place, an entrance to the Spring Meadow subdivision in Fate.
The biggest challenge facing city officials involves school traffic to Anita Scott Elementary School on Erby Campbell Boulevard. The primary route to the school now is via the two-way south service road that will become one-way for eastbound traffic when construction starts.
Motorists traveling to the elementary school will have two choices.
One option is through the neighborhoods and the other is to drive to Fate, then come back to Royse City on the south service road.
Most people are not going to take the Fate route, according to city officials. Instead, they likely will choose the neighborhood route that will take them from FM 548 to Erby Campbell via Rowdy Drive, Cookston Lane or Welch Road.
Other plans for Sunrise Meadows include installing “speed hump ahead” signs.
The Creekview and Quail Ridge neighborhoods also would be affected.
In the Creekview neighborhood, rumble strips will be installed on Rowdy Drive to warn motorists of an existing stop sign at Logan Drive. “Stop sign ahead” signs also will be installed.
In Quail Ridge, the city council will consider passing an ordinance prohibiting parking on the east (northbound) side of Lesli Drive. “No parking” signs also will be installed.
The city council also will consider passing an ordinance prohibiting through truck traffic in all three neighborhoods. Appropriate signage also will be installed.
Other recommendations and plans include:
• Purchase and install school zone warning devices (solar flashing lights or signs);
• Grade and add material to Circle Lane on a regular basis; and
• Cut back and trim trees on the south end of South Erby Campbell Boulevard and down Circle Lane.
