Concern had been expressed by Fate citizens in the past over how children will get to Harry Herndon Intermediate School when it opens this fall on Blackland and Greenbriar Roads in Fate.
No sidewalks line the two roads, and many of the adjacent neighborhoods don’t have sidewalks.
Because some of the neighborhoods serving the school and Blackland Road have no sidewalks, the district will provide bus service to all neighborhoods and students attending the school, said Jimmy Butler, finance director for Royse City ISD.
He said that is similar to how the district handles Hidden Creek subdivision on the other side of FM 1777 from Davis Elementary.
“We feel like it there is not a real safe way to cross Blackland Road,” said Butler.
Blackland is a two-lane asphalt road, which is being resurfaced and upgraded by Rockwall County, prior to the City of Fate taking over ownership.
The intermediate school will eventually be joined on the site by a Royse City ISD middle school. The campuses will share parking and other needs.
Approval is expected to be given by Fate city council to the final plat of the intermediate when it is presented soon, since council approved the preliminary plat recently.
Council also approved the site plan for the campus and surrounding school district land. It contains sidewalks and landscaping within the school district property.
Harry Herndon’s construction just about used all of the 2005 bond. That bond money also built Miss May Vernon in Fate, added to Davis Elementary, remodeled Fort Elementary, added the stadium and auditorium, built the ag facility, and the baseball, softball and tennis facilities, Butler noted.
“We will be looking at another bond for the middle school, and to add at the high school,” he said. The high school was designed for phases of additions.
Claycomb Associates, Architects, designed Harry Herndon Middle School as basically a box.
Every corner in a construction project costs money, Butler said they were told by their construction manager agent, Gallagher Construction Service.
“Claycomb took the information and designed accordingly to get functionality and ambience and reduce costs,” Butler said.
